MEH Begins Fitting Out Cable Decks in Hinkley Point C’s Nuclear Island

Hinkley Point C has achieved a milestone as the MEH team begins the mechanical, electrical, and HVAC fit-out of the cable decks across the four safeguard buildings on Unit 1. This step follows the extensive groundwork laid by the Civils contractor who prepared the buildings for this complex installation.

Located on level 4 of the buildings, the cable decks are referred to as the “central nervous system” of the Nuclear Island. These decks will eventually house the electrical cables connecting from the electrical, and back-up buildings, routing them to the switchboard cabinets. Once in place, these switchboards will break down power supply so electricity can be distributed safely across the Nuclear Island.

The MEH team has spent several months preparing for this phase, where precision is key – everything installed must be in the correct order. Supporting this milestone, the procurement and supply chain team has played a vital role in ensuring that all necessary materials and components are prioritised and available for the early stages of the fit-out sequence.

Murielle Amirat, MEH Senior Project Manager, said: “Collaboration with our civils colleagues has been very productive, with great communication that’s resulted in early handover of areas within the Safeguard Buildings, along with the installation of scaffolding, temporary works, while the appropriate documentation checks were undertaken.”
