National Apprenticeship Week – meet Fawwad Chowdhury

Fawwad Chowdhury – Project Engineer Apprentice
Fawwad grew up in Bridgwater, a hub for nuclear power stations. He is now in his third year of his project engineer apprenticeship with MEH Alliance. After finishing his A-levels at a local college, he did not hesitate to apply when he saw an intake for this apprenticeship.
“I was keen to earn and learn at the same time. My older brother completed his apprenticeship with another Tier-1 contractor at Hinkley Point C, so, I knew what I wanted. I spent two years at Cannington College studying Nuclear Engineering, which motivated me to join Hinkley Point C. I’ve always had an interest in STEM topics, so learning something new every day and being able to learn from different trades and professions on the job is a privilege for me.”
Working independently and collaboratively
“I am empowered by colleagues to be responsible for my own projects. I assist with the construction delivery of the Electrical Building, proactively looking at schedules of our works, checking and ordering materials, and helping the team resolve any issues with installation. This has helped me learn practical skills where resilience and flexibility are absolutely necessary in the construction industry. If plan A doesn’t work, then you’ll need plan B in place.”
My advice to those who would like to join an apprenticeship
“Follow your intuition and apply for a role you think you’ll enjoy as soon as possible. There are so many opportunities available, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn. My peers are all supportive, and they help me progress in my career.”
